Citroen Relay Exchange Engines

An exchange engine can shorten the route back to work when a compatible prepared unit is available and the failed engine is acceptable for return. Stock, core condition, surcharge, fitting and warranty terms vary by workshop, so these points must be confirmed before collection or dismantling.

How does an exchange engine work?

The workshop supplies a compatible replacement unit and normally takes the removed engine in return. It may require a refundable core surcharge or apply conditions to the returned unit. The replacement can be supplied only or fitted. The quotation must explain return timing, acceptable core condition, included parts and warranty.

When an Exchange Unit May Help

Reduced Waiting

A prepared compatible unit may be available before the customer’s engine could be fully rebuilt.

Clearer Scope

The supplying workshop can describe the replacement unit and core-return terms before authorisation.

One Fitted Route

Where supplied and fitted, one workshop handles removal, compatibility, fitting and warranty. Exchange is not automatically the cheapest or fastest route; availability and the failed core’s condition decide whether it is suitable.

Core and Surcharge Questions

Before agreeing, confirm: These terms should appear in the workshop’s written quotation.

whether the old engine must be returned

when it must be returned

whether a core surcharge applies

what damage makes the core unacceptable

who pays return transport

whether missing parts affect the credit

whether dismantling can begin before exchange approval

what happens if the engine identity differs from the enquiry

Exchange Still Requires Exact Matching

An exchange unit must match the relevant vehicle and engine specification. Registration, Reg no., engine code, output and emissions configuration may all matter. Do not dispatch the failed engine or authorise fitting until the supplying workshop has completed its compatibility checks.

Workshop-Issued Cover

The selected independent workshop supplies the written warranty. Duration and scope depend on whether the exchange unit is classified and supplied as reconditioned, rebuilt, used or another defined condition. Ask for the exact category and cover rather than assuming every exchange engine receives the same warranty.

Check Compatible Exchange Stock

Submit the registration, postcode, engine symptoms and whether the van is mobile. Suitable independent specialists can confirm whether an exchange route is available.
